Newtown - a Touch of Paradise

February 2007, by Gini

Newtown was everything we wanted on our flat list. A close walk to the shops, a 20-30 min walk to work, a dishwasher, huge sunny deck for summer all rolled into a warm compact flat.

Although we didn't really want to move again, Tom's 7th flat move, and my 3rd because moving is not the most pleasant of things to do in your past time. But Thorndon didn't want us anymore and so it begun.

We had some interesting neighbours that lived in a big double garage, who every saturday night got really drunk and yelled out for 'crystal' - never got to meet her unfortunately. Our other neighbour which shared upstairs with us was never home so it felt like we had our own house with a medical centre below if ever needed. It was really fun fixing the problems around the flat to make it more our home. We built a kidney bean shaped bench top for a recyled breakfast bar to add bench space to the very small kitchen with two bar stools to boot. We created an aquatic feel in the bathroom with frogs and fish! not real ones yet! It was a good thing the flat wasn't any bigger or who knows what else we would have done.

We trained for our 'Taupo Relay' around the local neighbourhood in the good weather which helped our discovery for the best fish & chip shop ever! Maverick - don't even get me started on the pizzas. It was also a good way to check out the area as a possiblity for property purchase, the style and archtecture of the houses is just what I want when I grow up, and so many 'do uppers' a waiting dream.

We were sad to leave but we left it in great hands and have even been back! Jo & Shane we hope you enjoy!
