Ohakune Ski Trip

September 2005, by Gini

We set off as early as Peck & Turner possible to beat the crowd to the top carpark (a Turner tradition - thanks Dad).

10am just didn't cut it! - So strange. We ended up in the eighth carpark which sounds bad, but that didn't deter us! A trek and purchase of lift tickets later and we were on the slopes. Gini on a snowboard for the first time ever, boarding the flat Alpine Meadows. While Tom, the more experienced of the two brushed up on his forgotten skills, yelling words of encouragement at Gini - who was most likely on her ass - again so strange.

After a much needed lesson for Gini, Tom bravely weened Gini off the baby slopes and up to the Winter Garden. Where we met up with Tom's sister Jen and her mate Catherine, who were both on skis - how god intended us to travel by snow!

Pommer after pommer and the day was coming to an end; we stiffly walked to the car - which was of course in the eighth carpark! And travelled home to the Totora Turner lodgings for a hot shower and a much deserved drink.

The second day was just as good, weather wise so Gini couldn't let an opportunity like this pass her by to get out her skis and once again wash the snow, as her brothers would say! Tom after a day of snowboarding had a taste for more so off we went. Gini this time weening Tom off the lower slopes for the Giant! And Quad high flyer chairlifts, which he creamed. We attempted the high noon T-bar but not with much luck - I left Tom behind as the T-bar took off! - Next time babe!

All in all an awesome powdered weekend left us wanting more so until next winter - Mt Ruapehu you will keep. g
