Tom's New Desk

June 2006, by Tom

A while after I received an excellent assortment of tools for Christmas from my family, Gini suggested to me that I should put them to good use and make myself a desk - as my current desk was a tiny little white kiddie desk, which is far from fitting for the very expensive Mac which sits on top of it.

Three months later, and here I am, typing away, sitting at my incredible new Rimu flavoured desk! It's awesome, I can swing round to my right, and there is what seems like another desk where my laptop sits begging for some attention!

Why did it take three months, you say?

Well, after making the little mock-up models, the initial purchase of the materials and the wood, the enjoyment factor was like a great wave of fluctuation.
  • Drawing the shapes on the wood and cutting them out? Great fun! Skill saw go waeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  • Sanding down the pieces of wood so that the surface is actually smooth and nice? Painful! Luckily Gini was an expert (and a very meticulous) sander - her help at this stage was life saving.
  • Waxing the bits of wood? Sore on the old arms, but rewarding! I decided on Rimu coloured wax, which does a great job - but unfortunately shows up the little bits of sanding marks rather well. Oh well.
  • Putting the desk together? Perhaps a little rushed due to the anticipation of actually using the thing - but it works great! Just don't look to closely at the joins, as they could do with a bit of a touch up here and there.
  • Sitting on the desk, and realising it's all finished? Priceless!
Thanks to Mum + Dad and Jen + Dave for the tools which helped make it happen.

Thanks to Helen and Robin for the kind use of their garage (without them knowing!), and for not beheading me when they came home to a sawdust covered car! Thanks also to Robin for helping me strap the desk to the roofrack of the sawdust car for transportation home.

Special thanks to Gini for my inspiration, my motivation, and my right hand (wo)man. I'm sure there will be many more creations we can get our hands dirty with. T
