New York, New York

November 2008, by Gini

We hopped off the flight in JFK expecting people to pop out dancing and singing the musical, New York! It seems New York isn't like Scrubs. Instead we arrived late at night and hopped on the subway (no not the sandwich) to our accommodation. The following morning we caught up with Andy and Nicky for some fine breakfast at a diner and caught up on the news.

People had warned us about the weather and we had bought the right gears, it reminded us of Wellington on a really bad day. It was lovely when the sun came out though. We did all the tourist attractions, like the good tourists we are, saw the old Sheila in iron, who might I add is massive! Walked Wall street, a little boring for the creative minded! We even timed it well with the big Marcy's parade which was cool, got to see snoopy. It's funny how much influence America had on our childhood Cartoon characters! Good old snoopy.

We enjoyed some thanksgiving food, tried to walk all those burgers off in Central Park, which is huge. Grabbed a coffee at Central Station, which didn't feel like a station at all. Learnt about Dinosaurs in the National History Museum. Ate a hotdog in the sun and took in some of the views from a cruise trip around the harbour, the Americans can sure build great bridges! We met up with an old school friend from Wellie, Nichola and she took us out for dinner in East Village which was great and it turned out she lived a block away from our hostel so we enjoyed some wine at a local wine bar too. The cold weather caught up with me and I totally lost my voice the next morning, but eating and drinking were still possible so all wasn't lost!

With the snow in the morning and then turning to rain we opted for an inside experience at the Body Works exhibition, which Nicky really wanted to see. It was interesting to see real body parts preserved in that way, learnt a lot but by the end of it, kind of freaked me out a little!

We finished the 5 day trip with a fantastic dinner at Union Square Cafe which had table bread crumb cleaners! We then proceeded to finish the trip on a high with apple Martini's and a kooky bar and planing another few trips together with unlimited money funds to throw around!

The night ended with a fantastic idea to pack our bags that night and instead of going to sleep we would head straight to the airport! Great in theory, I can safely say I hit an all time low sleeping on the the gate lounge floor. Great trip, great apple Martini's - Andy and Nicky what will our next drink of choice be for Italy?
